For the second concert in the 84th season of Marlborough College Concert Series, we welcomed the internationally renowned pianist, Warren Lee.
Warren attended the College from 1992 -1994, and since then, has enjoyed a glittering and distinguished career as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician.
His programme, entitled The Leipzig Connections, brought together composers associated with that famous city and included music by Bach, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Chopin.
Needless to say perhaps, but this was a programme to savour, expertly delivered with an exceptional level of detail in both colour, precision and enviable rhythmic control.
Warren plays with a sensitivity and drama that draws the listener in, matched by a clear depth of emotional and intellectual understanding, whether in the style of Bach, or the more romantic and robust nature of Chopin’s G Minor Ballade.
In the end, Warren decided to turn the programme upside down and begin with the Chopin.
It was a successful and nice twist, as he wanted to start his programme with the same piece that he played 32 years ago on the Mem Hall stage as a pupil here at the College.
The fine Mem acoustics played their part too (not forgetting the fabulous Steinway), and the audience was suitably captivated throughout. A beautifully crafted performance from a fine player indeed.
